Dahlia Cuttings Masterclass FAQ
FAQs
What's actually included in the ticket price?
You're getting the full experience! Your ticket covers all the specialized gear and propagation materials you'll use on the day, guided step-by-step instruction from me, a copy of my exclusive cutting guide booklet, and morning tea (a proper cuppa and a chat). Best of all, you get to take home 6 "unicorn" variety dahlia cuttings that you make yourself during the class.
Do I need to bring anything along with me?
Just your lovely self and a notebook if you're the type who likes to scribble things down! I provide all the snips, trays, plants , and specific gear required for the class. If you have a favorite pair of garden snips or a preferred apron you feel lost without, feel free to bring them along, but otherwise, I've completely got you covered.
Can a total beginner join in, or do I need experience?
This class is absolutely perfect for beginners! You do not need to be a seasoned flower farmer or have a green thumb to get a lot out of this morning. We start right from the ground up. If you can hold a pair of snips, you can do this.
Why is the class scheduled for September?
September is the absolute sweet spot of the year for this! It’s right when spring hits, the weather begins to turn, and your own tubers at home will just be starting to wake up from their winter nap. By doing the workshop now, the timing is perfect—you can take the skills you learn with me on Saturday and immediately put them into practice on your own patch at home.
Best of all, doing it now means you don't have to worry about babying fragile little cuttings through the freezing winter months. It gives you the maximum amount of time to safely multiply your stock right when the weather is working with you, just as the planting season kicks off.
Are cuttings harder to grow than traditional tubers?
Not at all, they just have a different starting line as you're using green material and skipping the tuber waking and sprouting stage. Once they settle into the ground, they grow incredibly fast, bloom their absolute heads off all summer, and build a full clump of brand-new tubers for you to dig up by winter.
What exactly is a "unicorn" cutting?
In the dahlia world, "unicorns" are those highly sought-after, incredibly beautiful, or hard-to-find varieties that usually sell out in seconds online. Instead of standard garden-variety types, I'm opening up my private stock so you get to take home some truly special blooms for your patch.
What happens if I buy a ticket and can no longer make it?
Because spots are strictly limited and I source live materials and fresh catering specifically for the head count, tickets are non-refundable. However, they are completely transferable! If life gets in the way, you are more than welcome to pass your ticket along to a gardening mate, just send me a quick message to let me know who will be taking your spot so I can welcome them properly.
Is there parking available at the venue?
Yes, there is plenty of free parking right at the Lilydale Lake Community Rooms. It's nice and easy to find, so you won't have to go hiking across a massive field just to get to the front door.
What if the weather turns absolutely foul?
Don't stress! The Lilydale Lake Community Rooms are fully enclosed, cosy, and undercover, so we'll be warm and dry inside regardless of what the Victorian weather decides to dump on us on the day.
Do you accommodate dietary requirements for morning tea?
I'll absolutely try. I want everyone to enjoy a proper cuppa and a treat, so if you are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, or have any allergies, just leave a note in the comments section when you're checking out and I will try my best to get you something suitable.
How do I get my 6 new babies home safely?
I'll provide a secure little tray/box for your cuttings so they don't tip over on the car ride home. If you are travelling a fair distance or have a long drive back, it's not a bad idea to bring an empty cardboard box or green shopping bag to sit them in on the floor of the passenger seat so they stay upright and out of the draft.
Can I bring my kids along with me?
Because we're working with sharp blades, specific gear, and space inside the room is strictly limited to the headcount, this particular workshop is just for the ticket holders. It's a great excuse for two hours of uninterrupted "me time" away from the household chaos!
